Geschichte zur Rebsorte

Blauer Arbst (966) takes its name from the Albanian Arbëresh tribe. Arbst spread in the 14th century, after the devastating Magdalene Flood (1342), from Albania via rulers of the House of Anjou to the Loire, and then to us. The variety name was deeply rooted in the dialect. Old Baden winemakers would say, when they went to work in the vineyard, "We go to the Arbst" or "We go to arbsten."

Wine description

Tasting: September 25, 2024: All wine lovers know that Pinot Noir in Burgundy produces the world's most elegant and, unfortunately, most expensive red wines. Not quite as expensive, but noticeably related, is the Blauer Arbst from the 2022 red vintage. The nose already offers plenty of fruit, ripe black cherry, and a hint of noble cedar from the oak aging. Extremely charming, approachable, and smooth, it continues in the mouth. Red fruits dominate, with a subtle spiciness added, a wonderfully elegant red that combines substance and reverie. A summer evening in an orchard with a sweeping view of the countryside.

Anchored in the dialect

Location: The last vines of this rare variety survived undetected, mixed in one of the last blends in the Ortenau region, together with various Pinot varieties, Gutedel, Muscat, Bouvier and Räuschling.

History: The oldest origins of the variety date back to the 7th millennium BC in Central Asia. Later, the Arbst spread to France with the Moors (Maurillon) during the Crusades (11th–13th centuries), where it first appeared around 1302 as Auvernas (Maurillon) in the Orléanais region. The Blauer Arbst (966) takes its name from the Albanian Arbëresh tribe and was brought to the Loire again in the 14th century after the devastating Magdalene Flood (1342) from Albania via rulers of the House of Anjou. It belongs to the Auvernas-Morillon-Pinot Traminer family and was a key ingredient in Affenthaler wines. During the Little Ice Age (c. 14th–19th centuries), the variety disappeared again in many regions, surviving only in microclimatic warm spots. In Germany it was widely used in mixed varieties until the 19th century, but was later replaced due to its lower yield, even though it was considered to be of higher quality than Pinot Noir.

Winemakers and grape breeders

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for his vine production. The grapes from these rare vines are vinified with the highest level of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
