Geschichte zur Rebsorte

The Blauer Hängling (060) is historically difficult to identify. It probably belonged to the highly valued Tressiaux/Trussiaux variety group, with which today only one grape variety is associated. (Trousseau) This is a widespread, fatal error in grape variety research, which historically undermines and thus wipes out a multitude of formerly very valuable grape varieties.

Wine description

Tasting 09/25/2024: This is the very first wine ever made from this historic grape variety. This impressive fact, however, should not obscure the fact that this is not a liquid historical lecture, but rather a hedonistic pleasure. The Blauer Hängling captivates with dark, fresh fruit reminiscent of ripe cherries and blackcurrants. It spreads in the mouth, flat and balanced, without sharp acidity or overripeness. Fine tannins remind you that this wine will perform excellently at the table. It's almost as if you're in the mountainous regions of northern Greece, where the forest is already very present, but you can still see the sea in the distance.

The great unknown

Location: The last vine survived in the wine-growing region of Höhnstedt, Saxony-Anhalt.

History: The ampelographically elusive Blauer Hängling (060) was considered extinct in Germany until its rediscovery and identification. Historically a virtually unknown quantity, it can only be assumed that this red wine variety, belonging to the medieval Tressiaux/Trussiaux group, was imported from Albania to France after the Magdalene Flood (1342) to rebuild the vineyards along the Loire. From there, it spread further.
Until the mid-19th century, no distinction was made between individual grape varieties in France, but rather the much greater variety diversity of that time was grouped into variety groups. Historical literature refers to LES Gamez, LES Pineaux, and LES Tressiaux/Trussiaux. Today, only THE Gamay, THE Pinot, or THE Trousseau are known. Our research has uncovered an ancient wine world unrealized by today's wine world! With fatal consequences for today's varietal wine enjoyment...
