Geschichte zur Rebsorte

"Carrot" is a synonym for Blauer Traminer. "Carrot" can be equated with Morillon. The Merovingians are the ancient Morins (Morini), who lived on the Lower Rhine in Normandy, where Blauer Traminer was also native. If you interpret this as Maerovins, you quickly arrive at Morillon, or "carrot." Blauer Traminer wine, sensorially speaking, takes you to the transition from late antiquity to the early Middle Ages, when the Merovingians primarily governed Neustria, i.e., northern France without Lorraine (Metz = Carolingian).

Wine description

Tasting 09/19/24: When you think of "Traminer" as a wine, you picture a rose-scented white, sometimes even a touch of residual sweetness. The contrast to the red version couldn't be greater. The Blauer Traminer flows into the glass with a deep, dark color. Even on the nose, you detect its southern power, with notes of wood smoke and blackberry ripeness. The additional year in the bottle has done this powerful wine a world of good, although its youthful bite still shines through. This could never be a German wine, one might think, and is much more reminiscent of an Aglianico from southern Italy. And that's what we're thinking about when pairing it with food.

Merovingian wine

Site: A vineyard planted in the 11th or 12th century with over 30 vines. It survived in Dobbrikow, a fallow vineyard in Brandenburg. A second site with another vine was found in the middle of a pine forest.

History: The "Les Fromenteaux" variety group was primarily found in Haute-Marne, Champagne, and Lorraine, along the Haute-Saône, Moselle, and Meurthe, and probably also in the southern departments. The varieties of the Fromenteaux group, which also include Blauer Traminer (synonym: Fromenteau Noir), likely belonged to the old vineyards in Haute-Marne. In the Middle Ages, the Cistercian monasteries of Brandenburg were particularly closely associated with the mother monastery of Morimond in the Haute-Marne* department, where the Fromenteaux Noirs were most widely grown before the French Revolution. The vineyards at that time were often over 400 years old. This takes us deep into the Middle Ages in terms of wine sensory experience.
(*was founded after the French Revolution by combining parts of Champagne, Burgundy, Lorraine and Franche-Compté into one department.)

The protagonist

"What makes historic grape varieties so unique that they have been cultivated by our ancestors for thousands of years? It can only be about taste, right?"
In his search for answers, Ulrich Martin planted a globally unique selection of unknown, ancient grape varieties in his own vineyards, which were once proven to be native north of the Alps. From his grapes, he vinifies special wines that are the first in their millennia-old history to be produced as a single varietal. His courage and risk paid off!
"Being the first to immerse yourself in such an ancient, yet completely unknown world of flavors through the sensory experience is priceless. For me, and for every curious wine lover, every day is Christmas."
