Geschichte zur Rebsorte

The true late Burgundy has been lost due to misidentification. In Burgundy, the noblest and most valuable red wine varieties were called "Noirien." This group of varieties was also referred to as "Pineau" Noiriens. Unlike today's "Pinots," which have thin skins and oval berries, the thick-skinned and round berries of the earlier Pineaux have all the necessary qualities for a first-class red wine.

Wine description

Tasting 09/25/24: Franconian Burgundy and Franc Pineau are two names for this grape variety with incredible future potential. This great red wine starts off quite quietly on the nose, revealing only hints of blackberry and warm spices. But then, little by little, it reveals its full splendor. It's almost as if the wine were wrapped in a wine-red royal cloak of firm, dense velvet. Blackberry fruit and clove are rich, noble, and with great depth. A very fine chimney smoke drifts from the corner of the room and blends with the woody fruit. Simply a majestic wine.

Black grape wine

Location: The last wild vines survived in a vineyard near Halle that had been abandoned since 1890.

History: Until now, wines from grapes with the origin number 938 were marketed under a different name. Legal requirements, as well as new historical findings, have forced us to subsequently change the name. We want to do justice to what is perhaps the most valuable red wine variety north of the Alps. Due to a misnomer, its existence was wiped out and only rediscovered by chance. It belongs to the formerly extremely valuable "Pineaux" variety group. All grapes in the "Les Pineaux" variety group were characterized by particularly thick-skinned and very dark to black berries. Their wines were among the best red wines north of the Alps until the mid-19th century! In Burgundy, everyone used to know that varieties called "Noirien" were grown in the Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte d'Or.

Treasure of biodiversity

The last surviving vines of historic grape varieties are living testaments to biodiversity. Once cherished and revered, then forgotten and lost, they now captivate us with aromas and other qualities often unattainable in modern varieties. As part of the "Historic Grape Varieties" project, Ulrich Martin is cultivating a wealth of these treasures. With every glass of his wine, you contribute to the preservation of a unique diversity—a piece of a nearly lost winemaking culture.
Enjoy wines from historic grape varieties, support their preservation, and experience a piece of wine history. With your enjoyment, you'll become a savior of these rare vines and discover their fascinating world!
