Geschichte zur Rebsorte

The Treveri people already knew how to utilize the growth characteristics of the Gelber Kleinberger. Therefore, Kleinberger vines were established on the steep slopes of the Moselle even before Riesling.

Wine description

Fine bubbles rise from the bottom of the glass, and the nose immediately tells you this won't be hard work. Less on the yeasty, briochy side and more on the floral, fruity side, this sparkling wine invites you to try it immediately. Aromas of almond, walnut, Meyer lemon, and orange peel emerge. Everything seems fresh and tangy, yet never sharp or even green. Harmoniously balanced for a brut sparkling wine, the Gelber Kleinberger evokes associations with early summer. More subtle than a Riesling, but endowed with the same fruity charm, this wine is readily accepted.

Winegrowing in the Little Ice Age

Location: A single find on the Bergstrasse. It also survived on the Nahe River, with Silvaner, Riesling, and Elbling in a blend. The oldest house vine on the Middle Mosel, approximately 350 years old, was a Kleinberger.

Grape variety: Even before Riesling, the Gelber Kleinberger (456) was cultivated as the main variety on the Rhine and Moselle. It arrived on the Moselle with the Trevor family. Due to its high frost resistance and adaptability, it experienced a renaissance during the Little Ice Age (15th to 19th centuries).
Until its final determination in 2007, this very old grape variety was considered extinct.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for his vine production. The grapes from these rare vines are vinified with the highest level of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
