Geschichte zur Rebsorte

Imagine a wine treasure that has existed since the Bronze Age: Hartblau! Crusaders once brought it from the Caspian Sea across the Danube to Germany, where it grew in Franconian and Saxon vineyards for centuries. For a long time it was considered extinct until it was rediscovered in old vineyards in 2007 - a living piece of wine history that shows us how diverse our viticulture once was.

2022 Hard Blue

24,50 €

Wine description

The Hartblau is truly unique among all red grape varieties in Germany. Its cool character makes it an absolute must for all curious wine lovers.
Admittedly, a grape variety with the adjectives "hard" and "blue" in its name doesn't necessarily attract those seeking great charm. However, 2022 was such a formidable year for red wines that this cool, austere wine was able to mature to true greatness. The nose already reveals noble cedar notes and dark berries reminiscent of Portuguese reds. In the mouth, noticeable hints of sweet cherry ripeness meet the more austere heathland that characterizes the Hartblau grape variety. The wine is dense, but never overpowering, thanks to its wonderful acidity. A big recommendation for all those who believe that Germany is incapable of producing impressive red wines other than Pinot Noir. Aging-worthy, stately, and noble.

Germany's oldest red wine variety

Location: The variety was rediscovered in very old Franconian vineyards (Steigerwald), where it grew in traditional mixed vines alongside other historic varieties such as Silvaner, Riesling, Elbling, Traminer, Adelfränkisch, Kleinberger, and Lagler. Until 2007, it was considered extinct in Germany—a lost treasure, so to speak!

History: The Hartblau is a true heritage variety, likely dating back to the Bronze Age on the southwestern shore of the Caspian Sea. What makes it particularly interesting is that it is genetically a twin of the Süßschwarz variety—they share 11 of 12 alleles! This is highly unusual in the world of grapes and a clear indication of its very great antiquity.
What's particularly intriguing is that Hartblau probably came to Bavaria, the Main, Saxony, and the Saale via Transylvanian Saxons and crusaders via the Danube. It is regularly mentioned in old East German and Saxon wine literature.
What makes Hartblau attractive for modern viticulture is that it is very robust and resistant to climatic extremes. It also shows low susceptibility to botrytis—traits that are once again in high demand today.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for his vine production. The grapes from these rare vines are vinified with the highest level of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
