Geschichte zur Rebsorte

The history of the true "Blauer Silvaner" dates back over 8,000 years and takes us to the origins of winemaking culture. As the most important parent variety of the "Blauer Shirvaner," it originates from Shirvan, an ancient wine region on the Caspian Sea. As early as the Middle Ages, it reached Franconia and the Tauber Valley via the Carpathian Mountains. This grape, the parent of today's Pinot Noir, was long considered extinct – until its surprising rediscovery in 2007. Today, its wines offer a unique opportunity to rediscover the origins and depth of wine.

Wine description

Tasting 09/13/2024: There are darker wines than the 2020 Sweet Black. There are also significantly sweeter ones, as it has absolutely no residual sugar. What our ancestors meant by the name, however, becomes immediately apparent at the first sip: The Sweet Black has fruit in abundance, indeed black cherry, red plum, wood smoke, and a hint of peppery spice. The additional year in the bottle has harmonized the slightly wild youthful notes. The Sweet Black has become velvety, and together with the attractive fruit, this ensures that you're already inclined to sip one, two, or three solo sips before the meal even arrives.

The vine - the original variety of our cultivated vines

Location: Only a few plants have survived on Gipskeuper on the Saale and on the western edge of the Steigerwald.

History: This rediscovered grape variety with the origin number 528 was cultivated by our ancestors over 8,000 years ago. What makes it so special? Perhaps its versatile uses, whether as a red wine or as a "white-vinified red wine" (Blanc de Noir)?
It is related to Traminer, Sauvignon, Hartblau and Elbling and is probably the mother of our Pinot Noir.
You can find out more about this very valuable grape variety in the certificate of origin.

The winemaker and grape breeder

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for vine production. The grapes from his mother orchards are vinified to the highest standards of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
