2024 Bormeo Verd, Tonneau

What Charlemagne already knew, but we couldn't have guessed until 15 years ago: The Bormeo Verd is an interesting border crosser . Never boring on the palate, it oscillates between an aromatic, creamy Burgundy and a white-fruited, precise Riesling. An all-rounder as a food companion!

Wine description

In 2023, the grape variety with the origin number 050 not only received a new name, but also a whole new dimension. It is completely dry, almost earthy, firm, with great depth. One senses that the vines are gradually reaching an age at which they can produce a truly sublime wine. It has a calm and serene feel, like the view from a cliff overlooking gently swaying treetops. The present fruit acidity is completely softened at the edges. Apple, pear, and walnut aromas peek through that one might think of as a Pinot Blanc. But don't be fooled: the structure draws you onward, to the next peak.

Already Charlemagne drank

Location: An old vineyard planted with "Weißburgunder" vines in the southern Palatinate.

Grape variety: Our grape variety, with the original number 050, was cultivated by Charlemagne in his empire as early as the early Middle Ages. It belonged to the noble group of "Old Franconian" varieties. At that time, at the Württemberg court, the court botanist Kerner (1815) named the variety "Bormeo Verd." Translated: "Green Wormser." The Green Wormser lent the sweet Worms wine worldwide fame.

What makes the wines so special?

"What makes historic grape varieties so unique that our ancestors have cultivated them for thousands of years? It must be the taste, right?"

Even for Ulrich Martin, who has been in the wine world for over 40 years, these original varieties were initially a mystery. To unravel the mystery, he planted a globally unique selection of old, unknown grape varieties that were once native north of the Alps.

In this exclusive online wine shop, you'll find exceptional wines, offered as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. "The sensory experience of being the first to immerse yourself in such an ancient yet unknown world of flavors is simply priceless. For me and for every curious, daring wine lover, it's like Christmas – every day anew."
