2024 Green noble metal, tonneau

My God! How could such a valuable variety be forgotten? Nearly extinct, it shows us year after year why it was once called a "noble variety." The first wines of this rarity surprised the wine world . To subdue the varietal's unbridled minerality , the 23-year-old Grünedel was also aged in a new tonneau.

Geschichte zur Rebsorte

Cultivated 5,000 years ago, this noble variety was spread throughout the Frankish Empire during the time of Charlemagne in the early Middle Ages. This gem therefore belonged to the core group of "Old Franconian" varieties. It was thus introduced into the mixed vineyards of Germany by German settlers from Moravia as early as the 8th century AD. Unfortunately, it was removed from the vineyards 200 years ago and forgotten until its rediscovery in 2007. → Learn more

Wine description

Grünedel, with the origin number 101, is a grape variety that would have to be invented if it didn't already exist. Such animating expressiveness, such a rich basket of subtropical fruits, it has to be experienced to be believed! The aging in a noble tonneau barrel adds the piece of the puzzle that was still missing for a complete work of art. Coconut and vanilla complement pineapple, guava, and orange blossom to create a firework of aromas. The 2023 Grünedel from the tonneau barrel is completely dry, and the elegance of its smooth texture simply glides over the tongue. You completely forget that such a wine also possesses an underlying power. A true journey of taste.

Noble variety in the Middle Ages

Location: More than 150 plants discovered in the Steigerwald forest. They also occur in Silvaner on the Nahe River, where the last of their species survived alongside Traminer and Elbling near Halle.

Grape variety: Grünedel (101) bears its noble name for a reason. Its resistance to heat and drought will bring it great advantages in the future. This gem was considered extinct until 2007 because it was considered a synonym for Weißer Traminer. Cultivated 5,000 years ago, the original variety is related to Traminer and Süßschwarz. It was part of the core group of old Franconian grape varieties, imported from Moravia by Charlemagne in the 8th century AD and native to Germany's blends. Its robustness and excellent grape ripeness, combined with its refined wine aroma, make it extremely valuable for domestic viticulture. THE climate winner!

Ulrich Martin

"Because until 200 years ago, most grape varieties were planted and vinified in a mixed manner in the vineyard, we found no historical descriptions of single-varietal wines."
But because today's wine world wants to know what a Grünedel or Schwarzblauer Riesling tastes like, Ulrich Martin planted his own vineyards with these forgotten and unknown grape varieties to discover what historical varietal wines taste like when grown as single varietals. This resulted in a globally unique range of wines whose varietal flavor characteristics are completely unknown even to the experienced wine world.
More and more wine enthusiasts are understanding why some of these original varieties were native to today's world-famous vineyards for thousands of years and contributed to their global fame."
