2024 Yellow Kleinberger

The Celts brought the Gelber Kleinberger to the Moselle 2,500 years ago. Due to its special cultivation characteristics, it became native to the steep slopes of the Moselle until it was replaced by Riesling at the end of the 18th century. With this wine, you'll follow the taste of a light, fruity "Riesling Cabbage."

Geschichte zur Rebsorte

The Treveri people already knew how to utilize the growth characteristics of the Gelber Kleinberger. Therefore, Kleinberger vines were established on the steep slopes of the Moselle even before Riesling.

Wine description

The days are getting longer, and everything is blossoming and greening up. At this time of year, which is a very pleasant time of year for most people, the semi-dry Gelber Kleinberger comes onto the market and adapts wonderfully to the outdoor developments. On the nose, there's an exciting combination of floral and spicy notes, linden blossom, crushed coriander seeds, and a hint of pear. In the mouth, the new white wine captivates with its immense lightness. A subtle acidity brings freshness, and the residual sweetness is only really noticeable as a hint of fruit. It's hard to imagine not pouring yourself a second glass...

Noble variety in the Middle Ages

Location: A single find on the Bergstrasse. It also survived on the Nahe River, with Silvaner, Riesling, and Elbling in a blend. The oldest house vine on the Middle Mosel, approximately 350 years old, was a Kleinberger.

Grape variety: The history of Kleinberger - a 2500-year-old wine history
Imagine: When the Celts were still roaming Europe, the Trier tribe brought a special grape variety to the Moselle – the Kleinberger. With its small, aromatic grapes, it became the region's most important grape variety and shaped winemaking on the Moselle and Rhine for over 2,500 years.
But then, at the end of the 18th century, the Archbishop of Trier set in motion a revolution: In just a few years, he had all his vineyards converted to Riesling. No sooner had the conversion been completed than the French Revolution forced him to flee across the Rhine—but by then, he had already accomplished his winemaking revolution.
Thus ended the millennia-old era of Kleinberger. Today, we find only a few of these historic vines, but they remind us of a time when wine on the Moselle tasted quite different.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for his vine production. The grapes from these rare vines are vinified with the highest level of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
