Geschichte zur Rebsorte

Many centuries before the Romans, spread by the Celts (Treveri), the White Traminer became native to our region. The synonym for Traminer, "Savagnin," refers to the wine region of Servan, the Persian name for Shirvan, a historic wine region in the Middle East, where this original variety has been cultivated for at least 5,000 years.

Wine description

What might spring on the southwestern edge of the Alps smell and taste like? The 2023 Weisser Traminer takes us on a journey. The wine flows brightly into the glass. Floral notes are immediately noticeable on the nose, with notes of locust tree blossoms that line the streams in May. Almond and walnut echo the earthy notes. Despite the noticeable strength behind it, the wine is distinctly delicate in the mouth. Notes of vanilla and almond tart creep around the sides of the tongue, almost offering a touch of sweetness, even though the wine is truly completely dry. It's fresh and deep, like the meltwater stream from the mountains, while flowering shrubs symbolize a new beginning that this highly attractive grape variety has now found here.

Regionally important original variety

Location: Found sporadically along the Bergstrasse in Mainfranken, in the oldest mixed clusters. A single find in the mixed cluster near Speyer. But also along the Saale River, together with Black Heunisch, Sweet Black, Sloe Grape, Heunisch, Elbling, among others.

Grape variety: Its synonym "Savagnin" refers to the wine region of Servan, the Persian name for Shirvan, where this original variety has been cultivated for at least 5,000 years. Due to the focus on Gewürztraminer, a variation of Weisser Traminer, this valuable grape variety, with a long-standing regional identity in Germany, has been completely overlooked. As early as 550 BC, it spread in the Alpine region and later in the Rhine Valley.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for his vine production. The grapes from these rare vines are vinified with the highest level of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
