Geschichte zur Rebsorte

The Blue Muscat - A journey through time! Imagine a grape variety that began its history in ancient India and traveled over millennia to our vineyards. The Blauer Muskateller survived hidden in old Swiss houses, while in Germany it was long considered extinct. Its story takes us back to the kingdom of Machchha, where the oldest Muscat vines once grew. It reached Europe via the ancient Silk Road, where it found a new home in the Alemannic region. A living piece of wine history that is now being revived.

2024 Blue Muscat Rosé

Wine description

"Secco" as such is actually a German invention, resulting from the combination of "Prosecco" with the term for rather dry wines. Our Secco also bubbles beautifully in the glass and displays such a delicate rosé hue that true Prosecchi wines would only be envious. The nose, with its subtle hints of strawberry and orange blossom, further contributes to its appeal. When describing the aromas in the mouth, one is involuntarily drawn to a sense of a life that makes the technical specifications disappear just a tiny bit on the horizon. Grape and orange peel resonate, the delicate sweetness, the fine bubbles, the cool glass, the waning evening. A sparkling wine for every day from April to October.

Original variety from India

Location: The Blue Muscat was rediscovered in northern Switzerland, where it had survived on old houses. Its distribution area stretched from the Swiss Rhine Valley to Schaffhausen, where it was found relatively frequently.

History: Imagine a grapevine whose story begins in ancient India! Blue Muscat originated in the Machcha kingdom in eastern Rajasthan. Even its name reveals its origins: Over the centuries, the name "Muscat" evolved from "Machcha" and "Vati."
From India, it took the northern route through Bactria and Khorasan—a route that made it a frost-hardy variety. This trait would later prove to be a great advantage in Europe.
It became native to the Upper Rhine Valley, Lake Constance, and especially the Alemannic-speaking region of Switzerland, Alsace, and Baden. A fascinating detail from its history: A Muscat vine was documented in the Jura around 1500, which was said to have been 1,500 years old at the time—a living witness from Roman times!
For a long time, Blauer Muskateller was considered extinct in Germany. But the vine survived hidden in old houses in northern Switzerland—a true survivor that today tells us the story of a millennia-old wine culture stretching from India to the Alps.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for vine production. The grapes from his mother orchards are vinified to the highest standards of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
