2025 Franc Pineau, Rosé

Germany, the land of white wine? Prepare to be surprised! For thousands of years, up until the early Middle Ages, this country was known almost exclusively for red and rosé wines. Back then, it was primarily the grapes of the legendary "Pineaux" varieties that delighted with their unique aroma and gave rosé wines their distinctive character. With every sip of our rosé, you'll experience this fascinating history anew!

Geschichte zur Rebsorte

Until the early Middle Ages, our ancestors preferred red and rosé wines because their tannin structure made them more durable than white wines. This also gave wine a religious connotation—after all, the blood of Christ is red, not white. Franc Pineau belonged to the "Pineaux" variety group, whose thick-skinned, round grapes—unlike today's thin-skinned, oval Pinots—offer the best conditions for first-class red wines.

Wine description

Anyone who already knows Franc Pineau as a red wine knows its power, spice, and depth. This quality also shines through in this rosé—and here, you don't have to wait a few years for harmonious maturity. Darker in color than other rosés, the wine is dense and redcurrant-like on the nose. The palate noticeably absorbs the ripe, sweet fruit; the Franc Pineau exudes more evening comfort than fresh adventure. A wine like this can wonderfully absorb spicy and umami notes and even contribute its own aromatic contribution. A contemplative wine that nevertheless boasts considerable development potential.

Black grape wine

Location: The last wild vines survived in a vineyard near Halle that had been abandoned since 1890.

History: Until now, wines from grapes with the origin number 938 were marketed under a different name. Legal requirements, as well as new historical findings, have forced us to subsequently change the name. We want to do justice to what is perhaps the most valuable red wine variety north of the Alps. Due to misnaming, its existence was wiped out and only rediscovered by chance. It belongs to the formerly extremely valuable "Pineaux" variety group. All grapes in the "Les Pineaux" variety group were characterized by particularly thick-skinned and very dark to black berries. Their wines were among the best red wines north of the Alps! And until the early Middle Ages, they were also used to make fantastic rosé wines.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for vine production. The grapes from his mother orchards are vinified to the highest standards of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
