Geschichte zur Rebsorte

Cultivated 5,000 years ago, this noble variety was spread throughout the Frankish Empire during the time of Charlemagne in the early Middle Ages. This gem therefore belonged to the core group of "Old Franconian" varieties. It was thus introduced into the mixed vineyards of Germany by German settlers from Moravia as early as the 8th century AD. Unfortunately, it was removed from the vineyards 200 years ago and forgotten until its rediscovery in 2007. → Learn more

Wine description

Grünedel (origin number 101) is a grape variety that can build up a lot of fructose in the berries, yet retains its fresh acidity even at high ripeness. These characteristics make it ideal not only for dry aging, but also for a fruity, sweet Spätlese wine – as in this case. On the nose, there are subtle tropical notes of lychee and pineapple that don't yet betray the expressive mouthfeel. Only then does the fruity, sweet Grünedel reveal its full green-yellow portfolio. Mango and pineapple are also present, but above all, there is a subtle vegetal vein, like that of candied angelica from a master confectioner like Lilamand in St-Rémy-de-Provence. The fact that Grünedel has a crisp acidity isn't even noticeable, as the fruity sweetness binds everything together to create a harmonious work of art. If you can wait, buy an extra bottle for cellar storage. The potential is simply enormous.

Noble variety in the Middle Ages

Location: Approximately 150 vines of the grape variety with the origin number 101 survived in the Steigerwald. Individual specimens were rediscovered in the Nahe region in mixed varietals, along with Silvaner, Traminer, and Elbling.

Grape variety: This original variety, cultivated 5,000 years ago, is related to Traminer and Süßschwarz. It was part of the core of the old Franconian grape varieties, imported from Moravia in the 8th century AD and becoming native to German blends.
The Grünedel (101) bears its noble name for a reason. Its robustness and excellent grape ripeness, combined with its refined wine aroma, make it highly valuable for domestic viticulture. This gem was considered extinct until 2007 because it was considered a synonym for Weißer Traminer.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for his vine production. The grapes from these rare vines are vinified with the highest level of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
