Geschichte zur Rebsorte

Our ancestors not only produced the finest red wines north of the Alps from the grapes of the Schwarzblauer Riesling, but also discovered that this grape variety, with its incomparable freshness, produced outstanding rosé wines. One of these wines, famous and esteemed, originally came from the Marne region and was affectionately called "Claret." Together with Franc Pineau, the Schwarzblauer Riesling helped numerous European vineyards achieve the fame we still admire today.

Wine description

The Schwarzblauer Riesling can also produce a beautiful rosé. The delicate salmon-pink color is so attractive, you'd almost want to leave the filled bottle without the label as a decoration. However, you wouldn't be making a big mistake by tasting the wine. The aroma alone reveals plenty of fruit, with strawberry and melon heralding summer. Accompanied by a delicate fruity sweetness in the mouth, the Schwarzblauer Riesling brings freshness and lightness. Yes, despite all the intellectual and historical overtones, historic grape varieties can also radiate such innocence, carefree, prancing. If you want to enjoy this side of wine, you should chill it well and drink it young. As a food accompaniment, it can also age for a few more months to then take on a spicier character.

A victim of the Little Ice Age

Location: The Schwarzblauer Riesling (234) was a victim of the Little Ice Age and survived with two specimens in one of the oldest Riesling vineyards on the Middle Moselle. Another vine survived in a disused vineyard in Brandenburg. It was documented to have been planted in the 12th century and had been waiting for rediscovery since the 15th century, forgotten and neglected for centuries.

History: The "Schwarzblauer Riesling" grape variety, named after the ampelographer Galet, had been widespread in Champagne, Alsace-Lorraine, and the middle and upper Rhine Valley since the early Middle Ages. Historical evidence clearly shows that the finest grape varieties once made their way from Germany to France—and not the other way around. This was also the case with the Schwarzblauer Riesling, which was then cultivated in France's most renowned vineyards. Even the Wends planted this vine south of Potsdam as early as the 11th century. Later, it reached the Cistercians at their mother monastery of Morimond, which is why we can still marvel at examples today in a 200-year-old vineyard on the Middle Moselle.

Like Franc Pineau, the Black-Blue Riesling belonged to the "Noiriens" of Burgundy. These grapes belonged to the Pineaux group. The Little Black (Noir Menue), as the Black-Blue Riesling was formerly known, was widespread in the Grand Cru vineyards of the Côte d'Or until the mid-19th century.
It was considered extinct until 2008.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for vine production. The grapes from his mother orchards are vinified to the highest standards of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
