Geschichte zur Rebsorte

The history of the true "Blauer Silvaner" dates back over 8,000 years and takes us to the origins of winemaking culture. As the most important parent variety of the "Blauer Shirvaner," it originates from Shirvan, an ancient wine region on the Caspian Sea. As early as the Middle Ages, it reached Franconia and the Tauber Valley via the Carpathian Mountains. This grape, the parent of today's Pinot Noir, was long considered extinct – until its surprising rediscovery in 2007. Today, its wines offer a unique opportunity to rediscover the origins and depth of wine.

2024 Sweet Black, Blanc de Noir

Wine description

The idea for Blanc de Noir actually originated in Champagne, where the grapes from the dark grape varieties grown there were quickly pressed to create a light-colored sparkling wine. Since then, the French name Blanc de Noir has always seemed to resonate with something noble and special. Our sweet black wine truly lives up to this reputation. Even the first sip is astonishing: so much gripping substance. You almost feel like you can tactilely sense the wine. Aromas like strawberry, rose, and pomegranate reveal the red grape, while hawthorn and rambutan emphasize the lighter elements. A truly exceptional white wine that's worth listening to.

Original variety of our cultivated vines

Location: Only a few plants have survived on the Saale and on the western edge of the Steigerwald.

Grape variety: The rediscovered grape variety with the origin number 528 has been cultivated for over 8,000 years. Why 8,000 years? About 8,200 years ago, a climatic anomaly, the so-called Misox fluctuation, caused a 300-year drought in Asia. As a result, peoples who already cultivated vines migrated to the Middle East. There, the Asian hybrid vines they brought with them interbred with the native wild vines. This led to the first heterozygous cultivated vines (F1 generation), which ultimately gave rise to our modern-day grapevines. "Süßschwarz," the parent vine of today's Pinot Noir, is also proven to belong to this very first generation.

Ulrich Martin

In addition to his nursery, Ulrich Martin cultivates his own vineyards, which he uses as mother orchards for vine production. The grapes from his mother orchards are vinified to the highest standards of craftsmanship. The result is wines from almost extinct original varieties, which are being vinified as single varietals for the first time in their millennia-old history. You now have the unique opportunity to purchase wines from this small, exclusive portfolio. Become an "archaeologist" of wine aromas.
